SA20 2023–24: News, Insights & Betting Predictions
The tightly contested 2023 SA20 season is expected to be followed by a similarly competitive campaign.
Sunrisers Eastern Cape won the inaugural SA20 season but are not considered favourites to defend the title. They retained most of their 2023 squad, signing just two new players.
The Pretoria Capitals are a strong contender for winning the championship, even though they let the trophy slip out of their hands in last year’s final. They had the highest number of open slots to fill (6), and they used the majority of their budget to pick up the all-rounder Matthew Boast, the joint most expensive player at the auction.
A strong showing is also expected from the Joburg Super Kings, who came second in the regular season standings last year. They’re excited to see how the all-rounder Dayyaan Galiem and two other big overseas signings, bowler Romario Shepherd and batsman Wayne Madsen, will fit into the team.
The third overall favourites are the MI Cape Town, who want to redeem themselves after finishing last in 2023. Aside from Sunrisers Eastern Cape, Durban’s Super Giants and the Paarl Royals will most likely fight for that last playoff spot.
SA20 2024 Full Schedule, Match Time, and Venues
The 2024 SA20 campaign will feature six teams playing ten regular season games each, with the top four progressing to the knockout phase. The season starts on January 10 and concludes with the big final on February 10.

Playing Squads
Like last year, the SA20 2024 campaign will consist of six teams backed by the familiar IPL franchises:
- Durban's Super Giants
- Joburg Super Kings
- MI Cape Town
- Paarl Royals
- Pretoria Capitals
- Sunrisers Eastern Cape
Each team is allowed 19 players on their roster, including up to ten domestic players, no more than eight overseas players, one rookie (SA national aged 22 or younger and not previously associated with the league), and one wild card (excluded from the Salary Cap).
Sunrisers Eastern Cape are the defending champs. After barely managing to squeeze into the playoffs in 2023 with four wins, five losses, and one no result, they had an excellent showing in the playoffs, winning by 14 runs against the Joburg Super Kings in the semis and beating the favoured Pretoria Capitals by four wickets in the final.
Durban's Super Giants and the Sunrisers left most of their rosters intact, each having just three slots to fill before the auction. Meanwhile, the Pretoria Capitals was the team that had the biggest roster shakeup. They retained only 13 players and were left with a lofty R9.74 million purse for new signings, which they used on Matthew Boast, Daryn Dupavillon, Paul Stirling, and Kyle Verreynne. Their wild card is a 27-year-old Welsh wicketkeeper, Phil Salt.
The Joburg Super Kings also have some exciting new additions, including the all-rounder Dayyaan Galiem and two overseas stars, Romario Shepherd and Wayne Madsen. They’re also putting a lot of hope in their rookie, Bryce Parsons, as well as in the Trinidadian wild card, Nicholas Pooran.
The Paarl Royals had the second-largest pre-auction budget and four slots to fill but didn’t spend much on their two new players from overseas, Lorcan Tucker and John Turner. The Sunrisers took the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” approach and retained most of their championship roster. The team’s most promising auction pickup is the all-rounder Beyers Swanepoel, while they also have high expectations from their rookie, Andile Simelane.
South Africa T20 Players to Follow
The two most expensive domestic pickups from the 2023 SA20 auction are all-rounders Dayyaan Galiem (Joburg Super Kings) and Matthew Boast (Pretoria Capitals). They were sold for R1.6 million each and are expected to be their respective teams’ instrumental pieces in the upcoming season.
Other notable South African draftees include the 29-year-old bowler Daryn Dupavillon, who went to the Capitals for R600k, and the all-rounder Beyers Swanepoel, who was picked up for the same price by the defending champions, Sunrisers Eastern Cape.
Out of the retained players, we should mention Durban’s captain Quinton de Kock, Joburg’s captain Faf du Plessis, who is entering his 22nd year of professional cricket, the MI Cape Town’s sole batsman Rassie van der Dussen, the Royals’ captain David Miller, the Pretoria Capitals’ veteran core of Wayne Parnell and Rilee Rossouw, and Sunrisers Eastern Cape’s Aiden Markram and Temba Bavuma.
